Sale: 449 / Modern Art, June 10. 2017 in Munich Lot 241

Lot description
Mädchen in der Heide. 1921.
Watercolor over carpenter's pencil.
Lower left signd and dated. Verso titled. On creme machine-made laid paper. 39.5 x 49.2 cm (15.5 x 19.3 in), size of sheet. [JS].

The watercolor is documented in the archive of the Karl and Emy Schmidt-Rottluff Foundation in Berlin.

PROVENANCE: Collection Bertram Burger, Heidelberg (acquired in auction 461 on 31st May 1960, lot 372 at Lempertz, Cologne. Ever since in the family's possession).

The strict, almost graphic duct in Karl Schmidt-Rottluff‘s watercolors was characteristic throughout the artist‘s creative life. Everything about his compositions is dynamic. A drawing that indicates the direction of the composition, is – just as it is the case with this early work– the frame for the colors‘ arrangement in the work. The strong watercolor brushstrokes add a brilliant coloring to the sharp contours in which Schmidt-Rottluff opens up the expressive heath landscape in front of us. The blue figure and landscape‘s array of forms call reminiscence of the watercolor "Frau im Wald" which Schmidt-Rottluff had made the year before. Today it is in possession of the Buchheim Museum in Bernried (cf. Christiane Remm, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Aquarelle, Berlin 2011, p. 34, illu. 23.). [JS]
