LITERATURE: Clemens Weiler, Jawlensky Köpfe - Gesichter - Meditationen, Hanau 1970, p. 159, no.10.

Alexej von Jawlensky painted the wife of the well-known Wiesbaden collector Kirchhoff in a restrained manner and pastel-like coloring. Owed to its calm atmosphere, the painting, which is rather arranged like a sketch, is a document of the trustful relation between the artist and his patron. The dress‘s moderate shades of bluefind effective support in the faint violet, however, entirely without running danger of breaking the restrained overall atmosphere. A comparison with Bonnard suggests itself, especially for the composition‘s decorative appeal. Leaving his established grounds, Jawlensky created a rather calm composition with this work, owed to the harmony of colors and forms it is an intentional approach to a contrary expression.
