In his unconventional compositions Feininger unites his preferred themes. The agitated figures in the foreground, their dynamic calls reminiscence of Futurism, are united with Feininger’s favorite subject; ships at sea, which we find in the upper margin of this depiction. This way the observer has a clear view onto the figures which Feininger rendered in a frieze-like arrangement and with nervous but accurate parallel strokes of the brush. Influences of Cubism are obvious and make for the drawing’s formative character. This rather small composition fully benefits from Feininger’s passion for drawing, a passion the artist would remain true to until the end of his life. [KD]
