"That is the pure poetic nature of true painting: with its own means of expression, with drawing and color, to give us a feeling of light and air.“
Max Liebermann, quote after: Max Liebermann, Die Phantasie in der Malerei. Schriften und Reden, Frankfurt a.M. 1978, p. 91.

The light breakingin through the foliage of the trees was a charming coloristic element in the works of the late impressionists. Max Liebermann, along with Max Slevogt, has made it a preferred stylistic device of his urban park landscapes. The Tiergarten, right in front of Liebermann's door, offered the opportunity for studies of nature from which the present sheet certainly originates. Striking are the few graphic means Liebermann requires (in his technical perfection) to create such an atmospheric park scene as that in our radiant pastel.
