LITERATURE: Cf. Otto Modersohn. Allgäu 1926-1939, Hofgartensaal d. Residenz Kempten May 5 - Juky 1 1990; Villa Stuck Munich July 11 - October 30 1990; Schloss Bonndorf, Waldshut March 3 - April 14 1991, Fischerhude 1990, pp. 32-33.

The contrast could hardly be any bigger. The flat landscpae around Fischerhude and the Allgäu with its mountains defining the vast horizon. Otto Modersohn felt at home in both surroundings and was able to adapt his painting to the respective setting. Yet, he saw the mountain landscape in a light different from that in paintings by traditional painters. His conception is characterized by a particular color tone, he spreads out a scene of nature in front of us that is, owed to the soft contours, considerably different from classic depictions of the mountains. The landscape is bathed in diffuse light, which, similar to the Fischerhude landscape, emanates an almost elegiac atmosphere. [KD]
