"Colors were bliss, and it seemed as if they loved my hands."
Emil Nolde, 13 October 1944

Nolde‘s exceptional watercolor technique of painting wet in wet on Japon is also responsible for the complete design of this sheet. The technique that Nolde had developed allowed him to capture the atmosphere of his North Sea motifs in swift brushstrokes on site. Nolde‘s passion for the rough North Sea began to show at an early point in his artist life, the primal element always was a source of energy and inspiration. As of 1912 this subject came to the fore and remained at the center of his creation until the end of his life. Made between 1930 and 1935, strong and contrasting colors are mixed directly on the sheet and create a rough dark blue sea with an angry red orange cloud cover. Sea and clouds almost seem to struggle with one another, which adds a strong dynamic effect to the composition. [CG]
