The depictions of figures in Nole‘s watercolors are characterized by their very own coloring. Unlike it is the case with his flower watercolors, in which Emil Nolde lets the colors of the blossom shine bright, his figure sheets are dominated by a color scheme that signalizes a certain escapism in favor of expression. Two children in boisterous play are taken to a sphere of hyperactivity through their red bodies and the wan yellow of their heads. In this work Nolde found a very singular way to depict children. Instead of emphasizing their cuteness, he illustrates childish conduct characterized by trollish rambunctiousness. [KD]
