The artist consistently gained new energy and inspiration from the sea. Depictions of his retreat in nature can be found throughout his entire oeuvre: his home and the sea with its coastal landscapes shaped by wind and rough wheather, rendered in his oil paintings and watercolors in intensive colors. “Abendwolken am Meer“ is a typical Nolde work in which the artist makes nature‘s dynamic and unpredictability, in this case the elemental force of the sea, accessible to the observer in tones of deep purple, yellow and red. Nolde‘s watercolors are born out of the color, it is his primary design element and the only way to visualize his artistic creed. In this work Nolde remains true to his well-proven composition, which is exclusively defined by the color's expressiveness. Mans exposure to the elements is one of the artist’s most significant pictorial themes. Living by the North Sea, the artist used the sensuous blaze of color to show an entirely new side of it.
