When considering the motifs that are characteristic of Gabriele Münter‘s pictorial oeuvre, the one of the work offered her is rather unusual. However, Münter delivers proof of her entire artistic potential in this work. On the one hand, there is the brush drawing in black that defines the composition‘s frame, on the other hand, there is the slightly uneasy wash brush stroke, filling the forms with the colors in Münter‘s typical manner. The entire composition is densely packed in the foreground, the view onto the tree-lined avenue is the only classic Münter motif. The 1930s witnessed Gabriele Münter‘s return to what she had developed with Kandinsky in the years before WorldWar I. At the same time, however, she accomplished a sort of new orientation in terms of her motifs, of which this work is a good example. Apart from her traditional works, Münter also created daring experiments, of which finding her own style was one of the most relevant ones. [KD]
