Lot description
Zwei Männer beim Ausbaggern eines holländischen Kanals. Um 1884.
Color Pastel.
Signed in lower right. On firm board. 57 x 76.5 cm (22.4 x 30.1 in) , the full sheet.

Fine and early pastel that captures the characteristic hazy lighting atmosphere of Dutch water landscapes in a spectacular manner.
Accompanied by a photo expertise from Dr. Margreet Nouwen, Max Liebermann-Archive, dated 27 November 2010. The work will be included into the forthcoming catalog raisonné of pastely, watercolors and gouaches.

PROVENANCE: Private collection South Germany (presumably acquired in Cologne in the 1920s, since in family ownership).

"Holland was rightly called the land of painting par excellence, and it is no coincidence that Rembrandt was a Dutchman. The fogs ascending from the waters, veiling the landscape and adding a specific pictorial effect to it. The watery atmosphere softens the contours and makes for the soft silverish gray tone; while the loud local colors are toned down, the grave shades are loosened up by color reflections: everything seems to be bathed in light and air." (Max Liebermann, Jozef Israels - Kritische Studien, Berlin 1901, pp. 17f.)
