PROVENANCE: Private collection North Rhine-Westphalia.

After his first nail pictures from the late 1950s, which were still characterized by strict sequences in symmetric order, these rigid structures were abandoned in the early 1960s. He began to arrange the nails in seemingly random positions and formed dynamic fields. Owed to the irregular arrangement of the nails in different angles and depths, he creates an impression of motion, which is increased by the effect of the play of light and shade. The artist is intensively occupied with the question of how a structure can be set in motion through the integration of light, through density and weight. In doing so Uecker inimitably succeeds in coaxing the illusion of slight dynamics from the rigid material. The format of the panel painting is made entirely void through the object's materiality, an impression that is increased by the fragmentation of the image carrier. [SM]
