This work is a sketch for the painting of the same name from 1916 (vgl. Gordon 469). It was part of the renowned collection of Dr. Frédéric Bauer, Kirchner's patron and confidant.
This work is registered at the Ernst Ludwig Kirchner Archive Wichtrach/Bern.

PROVENANCE: Formerly in collection Dr. Frederic Bauer, Davos.
Private collection Southern Germany.

EXHIBITION: E. L. Kirchner Gemälde + Graphik. Collection Dr. F. Bauer - Davos, Haus der Kunst, Munich, Nov. to Dec. 1952 and Haus am Waldsee, Berlin, June 19 to August 19, 1953, each cat. no. 132 (no illu.).

This drawing and the painting of the same name were made in Königstein where Ernst Ludwig Kirchner spent several months at the sanatorium of Dr. Kohnstamm in order to find relief from his WWI trauma.
In 1922 Kirchner met the head physician Dr. Frederic Bauer in Davos, who soon became Kirchner's close friend and confidant, as well as a passionate collector of his works. This drawing also became part of the acclaimed collection. [CH]
