Essay
Paintings from the second half of the 19th century show an increased emergence of a by then unknown subject: the industrial landscape. As part of the industrial revolution new urban centers that primarily served an engineered working environment came into existence. With the painting "Eisenwalzwerk" from 1875 Adolph Menzel dedicated an important work to this subject, its pioneering significance was so strong that it had decisive influence on following generations of artists. Industrial working environments and their downsides were in the focus of painting in the 1920s. Conrad Felixmüller addressed the topic on many occasions. The work offered here is particularly intereting for the combination of two image levels. The homey domestic world with the dreamy boy by the window underlines the coldness of the technological industrial world outside. The duality of two oppositional worlds that are mutually dependent adds a very special character to this composition. Since the industrial landscape is rendered in Felixmüller's typical shades of blue, the painting is a particulary fine document of the precision and clarity characteristic of New Obectivity in those days.
