Sale: 466 / Modern Art II, June 07. 2018 in Munich Lot 1

Lot description
Bauernhäuser (verso: Acker und Bauernhäuser). 1880.
Charcoal drawing.
Signed and dated in lower left. On grayish paper. 20.5 x 24.5 cm (8 x 9.6 in) , size of sheet.
This drawing from 1880 was presumably made during one of Liebermann's summer stays in Holland (cf. Eberle 1880/3, "Holländische Dorfstraße"). [CH].

"Why is it that the swiftest sketch seems to be more complete than the final picture? It is because the sketch is born from imagination and in just a few hours, while the weeks and months of working on the painting kills imagination."
Max Liebermann, in: Max Liebermann, Die Phantasie in der Malerei. Schriften und Reden, Frankfurt/Main 1978, p. 60
