Essay
By 1959 Warhol had become established in the New York art scene. Nevertheless, his non-commercial, "private“ drawings maintain their innocent naivety and a free "hand-written" illustration style up into the 1960s. This facileness also shows in our sheet. Warhol made several pictures with the dessert motif in that year. Some of these drawings are inscribed with the recipes, captured by his mother in calligraphy, for the depicted desserts. To Warhol eating meant a big extravaganza for which he was willing to spend a lot of money. This watercolor was presumably made at the trendy Serendipity 3 Café where Warhol had his "Coloring Partys“ with friends in the 1950s. [CE]
