"So-called abstract painting is not abstract in a sense of a strangeness to life and people. The artist feels natural sensations. A straight vertical has a certain value that all men can perceive equally. A curved line or a question mark trigger different emotions. Colors, in this sense, also cause certain reactions. Contrast effects are achieved through exact forms as opposed to pictorial, cloudy representations."
Willi Baumeister, Die Natur in der abstrakten Kunst, quote from: Wissen und Leben 1, Stuttgart 1952
