In 1941 the National Socialists imposed an occupation and exhibition ban on Willi Baumeister, which he could only overcome with his participation in the exhibition "Deutsche Kunst unserer Zeit" in Überlingen in 1945. On March 16, 1946 Baumeister was appointed Professor for Decorative Painting at the State Academy of Fine Arts by Theodor Heuss, then Secretary of Education in Württemberg-Baden and later German President. The artist noted the following lines in a diary entry: "Appointed to the Academy of Fine Arts, according to an official writing signed by Legal Secretary Dr. Kauffmann. In just 14 days 13 years will have passed since I was abruptly dismissed. I thought I could never rise to the top again. Now things are taking a positive turn [..]" (quote after: Willi Baumeister on March 16, 946, quote from: Willi Baumeister. Typographie und Reklamegestaltung, Stuttgart 1989). Right after this work here was made it went into the collection of mentioned Dr. Fritz Kauffmann, and has remained in the family until today. [CH].
• In possession of the same family since it was made.

The work will be shown to the Baumeister Archive on May 16, 2019.
