"When I adorn the sky with an abundance of clouds, and then go over them with glazing colors, it may be emanating nature, but I only follow my imagination ('it is painting'), my very own idea of nature, and these dreams, whether in front of nature or in the studio, they are the essence of my artistric creation, perhaps more than with anyone else, it makes me happy, it brings out the best in me, and that's what really matters."
Otto Modersohn in his diary, May 18, 1934, quote after: ex. cat. Otto Modersohn. Allgäu 1926-1939, Hofgartensaal der Residenz Kempten, May 5 - July 1, 1990, p. 19.
