Gegenüber der ersten Ausgabe (Basel 1543) um wichtige Details ergänzt und korrigiert sowie typographisch aufwendiger gestaltet. Insgesamt die dritte Ausgabe. - "This second edition is typographycally a masterpiece and a milestone in the art of printing. The paper is heavier and provided with a watermark ... The new type of letter was an imitation of the beautiful renaissance letter, introduced by Claude Garamont ... Oporinus' sense of typographycal beauty is shown by the text area, the full, completely uniform print, the placing of the indicative notes and reference in the margin on both sides an the insertion of smaller figures with their legends." (Lindeboom S. 9) - Vesals epochemachendes Werk gehört gleichermaßen zu den Klassikern der Medizin wie der Buchkunst. Der Höhepunkt unter den Illustrationen des Werkes sind die Folge der 14 ganzseitigen Muskelmänner, stehende Figurinen, an denen das Muskelsystem durch stufenweises Entfernen der verschiedenen Schichten erklärt wird. Sie besitzen einen durchlaufenden Landschaftshintergrund, der sich zu einem 360°-Panorama zusammensetzen läßt und dessen Örtlichkeit mit den Hügeln bei Abano Terme unweit Padua identifiziert worden ist. Die Holzschnitte gehören nicht nur zu den Höhepunkten der venezianischen Holzschneidekunst, sondern setzten Maßstäbe für die anatomische Abbildung, ja für die Buchillustration überhaupt. - Fehlen die S. 669-672 sowie der Index (24 Bll.). - Ecken mit geringem Mäusefraß, Seitensteg oder Fußsteg tlw. unauffällig mit Japan verstärkt, erste und letzte Bll. mit hinterl. Randläsuren (letzte 7 Bll. angerändert), 7 Bll. mit hinterl. Einriß oder erg. Randausriß, 1 Bl. aufgezogen, wenige S. leicht fleckig, Titel etw. angeschmutzt; vereinz. zeitgenöss. Marginalien und Unterstreichungen. Insgesamt gutes und sauberes Exemplar mit breiten Rändern.
Second Folio-edition. "Containing Vesalius's final revisions of the text, this edition is also superior for its enlarged format, improved typography and printing, better paper, larger woodcut initials, and changes to the lettering of the anatomical woodcuts" (Garrison/M.). With large woodcut title, fullpage woodcut portrait, 23 fullpage and ca. 200 smaller woodcuts in text. Mod. vellum. - Lacking the pp. 669-672 and the whole index (24 ll.). - Edges slightly nibbled, lateral edges mostly strengthened with Japon, backed marg. fraying to first and last leaves (last 7 ll. remargined), 7 ll. with backed tear, 1 l. mounted, few pp. lightly soiled, here and there contemp. marginalia and underlinings. In general good and clean copy with wide margins.
