Our pastel shows clear similarities with an oil painting from around 1916, which Voss registers as no. 472/589 in his catalogue raisonné. This is where our pastel is also mentioned

Signed lower right. 54,2 : 47,4 cm (21,3 : 18,6 in). In his works Franz von Stuck does not emphasise the model's psychological characterisation, but the pictorial elegance and decorative effect. He bestows the persons in his portrait an additional signifance beyond the plain portrait character, by depicting them in historical costumes. Our pastel is part of a series of works for which his daughter Mary acted as a model dressed as a Greek or a Spaniard, from around 1916. [RS]

In good condition. Slightly discoloured, the edges a little stronger. Edges rubbed due to the framing. With isolated superficial blemishes and rubbings, with tiny colour loss in places.
