Zichy is regarded one of the most important representatives of Hungarian Romanticism. Next to portraits and paintings with fantastic-mythical motifs, his oeuvre also comprises graphic art and erotic illustrations. Zichy also made illustrations for the works of Hungarian authors, such as the dramatic poem "The Tragedy of Man" by Im re Madach (1887) or the ballads byJanos Arany (1894–98). The "Mittagsrast der Bärenjäger (Dejeuner en plein air)" shows Zichy's masterly observation skills which allowed him to unerringly characterize every single man and to capture the atmosphere of the wintery hunting scene.
