Lot description
Stedman, John Gabriel
Narrative of a five year's expedition against the revolted negroes of Surinam, in Guiana, on the wild cost of South America; from the year 1772, to 1777. London, J. Johnson & Th. Payne 1806.

"His description of the cruelties practiced on the Negroes, and of the moral deterioration resulting to their masters, forms one of the most vivid indictments of slavery that have been penned. Not the least curious thing in the book is the story of his relations with Joanna, a beautiful mulatto, who nursed him when sick, and bore him a son" (DNB).

LITERATUR: Abbey, Travel 719. - Sabin 91075. - Bentley, Blake Books 499 B.

Important eye-witness account, accusing slavery in Suriname and Guyana in an unadorned manner. At the same time an account of the countries' flora and fauna, customs, economy and trade. 16 of the 80 fine plates were engraved by William Blak. Broad-margined and neatly colored copy. "One of the most vivid indictments of slavery that have been penned" (DNB). Large paper, hand-colored copy of the second edition. With 2 engraved titles with vignettes, 81 engraved plates and maps (3 folding and 1 double-page) by William Blake and others after Stedman, all exquisitely colored by contemp. hand.
