Erste Ausgabe des bedeutenden Werkes über Sonnenuhren, geschrieben von Christophorus Clavius (1538-1612), dem "Euklid des 16. Jahrhunderts".

Clavius war mit Galilei befreundet und lehrte am Jesuitenkolleg in Rom. "Durch seine eingehenden Untersuchungen über Sonnenuhren und Astrolabe und seine Bücher darüber übte er einen großen Einfluß aus" (Zinner). Houzeau und Lancaster sind voll des Lobes: "C'est le plus grand ouvrage existant sur la gnomonique."

EINBAND: Flexibler Pergamentband der Zeit. 33,5 : 23 cm. - ILLUSTRATION: Mit gestochenem Titel, Holzschnitt-Druckermarke und zahlreichen schematischen Textholzschnitten. - KOLLATION: 8 Bll., 654 S., 1 Bl. - ZUSTAND: Stellenw. mit Wasserrand, wenige Bll. etw. gebräunt, Titel unten angerändert, vord. flieg. Vorsatz mit hinterl. Randläsuren im Fußsteg. Einbd. tls. fleckig und etw. gewellt. Insgesamt guterhaltenes und breitrandiges Exemplar. - PROVENIENZ: Handschriftlicher Besitzvermerk "Dela Libreria de Don Benito de Ansotegui" (18. Jh.) am Fuß des ersten Textblattes (Widmung).

First edition of Clavius' most important contribution to the science of sundials. Together with Regiomontanus and Munster, Clavius was one of the most widely read mathematicians in Elizabethan England. With engr. title, woodcut printer's device and numerous woodcut diagrams. Contemp. limp vellum. - Partly with some waterstaining, few leaves slightly browned or foxed, title remargined at foot, front flying endpaper with marginal defects (backed). Binding partly stained and somewhat wavy. Good copy with broad margins. Ownership entry "Dela Libreria de Don Benito de Ansotegui" (18th century).
