Eines der schönsten Rheinbücher. Die englische Übersetzung förderte besonders in England die Popularisierung und Romantisierung des Mittelrheintals.

Erste englische und erste illustrierte Ausgabe. Bereits 1819 erschienen der deutsche Text und die Tafeln unabhängig voneinander, wurden aber erst 1823 zur ersten deutschen illustrierten Ausgabe vereint. - Mit den schönen Ansichten u. a. von Bingen, Drachenfels und Rolandseck, Fürstenberg, Hammerstein, Koblenz, Köln, Lorelei, Mainz und Oberwesel.

EINBAND: Halblederband der Zeit mit etw. Rückenvergoldung, Rücken alt erneuert. 35 : 28,5 cm. - ILLUSTRATION: Mit 24 kolorierten Aquatintatafeln nach C. G. Schütz, überwiegend von T. Sutherland und 1 grenzkolorierten gestochenen Faltkarte von W. Bartlett nach C. F. Ulrich. - KOLLATION: XIV S., 1 Bl., 178 S. - ZUSTAND: Tls. stock- und schmutzfl. (Tafeln nur vereinz. im Randbereich, 2 Textbll. sowie Titel und Frontispiz stärker), Titel und Frontisp. mit kl. Läsuren, 1 Textbl. mit kl Eckabriß. Einbd. etw. beschabt, Ecken bestoßen. - PROVENIENZ: Mit gestochenem Wappen-Exlibris des 18. Jhs. mit Wahlspruch "Leges Juraque Serva".

First English and first illustrated edition. With 24 colored aquatinta plates and 1 folding engr. map colored in outline. Contemp. half calf with slightly gilt spine, spine renewed. - Partly foxed and stained (plates only in the outer margins, 2 text leaves, title and frontisp. stronger), title and fronstisp. with small defects, 1 text leaf with corner tear off. Binding slightly scraped and corners bumped.
