Pedro de Medina
Libro de grandezas y cosas memorables de España. Sevilla, Dominico de Robertis, 8. August 1549.

Sehr seltene zweite Ausgabe des bedeutenden Amerikanums. "Includes references to New World discoveries & conquests & to Magellan's circumnavigation" (Alden).

"It is a curious work and contains many interesting particulars relating to the discoveries by Columbus" (Sabin).
"His knowledge of the New World was first hand, having travelled with Cortés .. The map depicts the trade routes to and from Spain and her possessions by the use of ships heading south-westerly on the outward bound journey and returning via the Gulf Stream to the north-east .. The second appearance of this map was in the first edition of Libro de grandezas de España published in Seville, 1548, with one notable difference. In this edition, and the subsequent one of the same title in 1549 only, there appeared a second woodcut which was printed below the American half of the map and extended its coverage to the Strait of Magellan. To accommodate this the lower border of the left hand side has been removed and is not seen again" (Burden).

EINBAND: Signierter Prachteinband von Emilio Brugalla: Roter Maroquinband mit Rückenvergoldung und goldgeprägten Deckelfileten, Steh- und breiter Innenkantenvergoldung sowie Ganzgoldschnitt; in Halbmaroquin-Schuber. 28 : 20 cm.

LITERATUR: Palau 159684. - BM STC, Spanish Books S. 58. - Alden/Landis 549.22. - Carter Brown Libr. I, 157. - Burden I, 14. - Vgl. Sabin 47348 und Harrisse 281. - Nicht bei Adams, Borba de Moraes, Leclerc und Church.
