Prachtvoll illustrierte und geschätzte englische Ausgabe der Fabeln des Aesop.

Teil II in erster, Teil I in zweiter Ausgabe. - "Seine 82 in langen Reimpaaren oder kunstvollen Strophen geschriebenen Fabeln sind in ihrer royalistischen Tendenz geprägt vom politischen Hintergrund Englands, das 1649-1660 als Republik von Oliver Cromwell regiert worden war" (Fabula docet). - Die Kupferstiche stammen von Wenzel Hollar, Dirck Stoop, Francis Barlow und Joshua English.

EINBAND: Restaurierter Lederband der Zeit (Rücken erneuert, Ecken ergänzt) mit goldgeprägtem Rückentitel. 41,5 : 27 cm. - ILLUSTRATION: Mit Frontispiz, 2 Kopfvignetten, 2 Initialen sowie 135 (st. 149) Tafeln, sämtlich gestochen. - KOLLATION: 2 Bll., 211 S.; 2 Bll., 195 (st. 231) S. - ZUSTAND: Bd. I ohne Porträt und Tafel 14/15, Bd. II fehlen 3 Tafeln (8, 32 und 36), im seltenen Anhang (Androcleus, ab S. 129) fehlen 10 Tafeln zu den Fabeln 2/3, 9/10, 11/12, 20/21, 23/24, 26 und 29. - Im Unterrand meist stark wasserfleckig bis feuchtrandig (Darstellungen nicht betroffen), dadurch bedingt tls. brüchig und rissig und 1 Bl. mit hinterl. Einriß, Titel und Frontisp. etw. gekürzt und aufgezogen, Titel mit etw. Buchstabenverlust, Innengelenke mit Leinen verstärkt. Deckel beschabt.

Part II in first, Part I in second edition. With frontispiece, 2 head vignettes, 2 initials and 135 (of 149) plates, all engraved. Restored contemp. calf (new spine and corners). 2 ll., 211 p.; 2 ll., 195 (of 231) p.- Vol. I without portrait and plate 14/15, vol. II are missing 3 plates (8, 32 and 36), in the rare appendix (Androcleus, from p. 129) 10 plates are missing for the fables 2/3, 9/10, 11 / 12, 20/21, 23/24, 26 and 29. - In the lower margin mostly heavily water- or dampstained (images not affected), due to this partly brittle and cracked and 1 sheet with backed tear, title and frontisp. slightly shortened and mounted, title with small loss of letters, inner joints reinforced with linen. Cover scraped.
