Erste Ausgabe. Der irische Mediziner Alexander Armstrong (1818-1899) begleitete als Schiffschirurg die 1850 von der Royal Navy ausgesandte Suchexpedition unter der Leitung von Robert McClure, die den Verbleib von John Franklin und seiner Mannschaft klären sollte. Während der fast 5 Jahre dauernden Reise durch arktisches Gebiet, auf der die von Eis eingeschlossene HMS Investigator aufgegeben werden mußte, konnte zwar zur Klärung von Franklins Schicksal und dem seiner Männer nichts beigetragen werden, jedoch querte McClure erstmals die von Franklin gesuchte Nordwest-Passage. - Das Frontispiz zeigt das ab 1851 vom Eis eingeschlossene Schiff.

First edition of the account by naturalist and naval surgeon Alexander Armstrong, who was part of McClure's expedition 1850 to 1854 in search of John Franklin and his men. Although they were not able to contribute new facts about the fate of Franklin, and had to abandon their ship "HMS Investigator" due to heavy ice, they were the first to complete the Northwest passage. With lithogr. frontispiece printed in 2 colors and 1 folding lithogr. map partly with color. Orig. cloth with gilt title on spine. - Slightly foxed, frontisp. and map stronger affected. Binding slightly rubbed, spine somewhat soiled. (R)
