Catalogue Raisonne

A Catalogue Raisonne usually refers to the definitive annotated catalogue of works by a particular artist. All known works are often inventoried in chronological sequence and arranged by medium/technique. A catalogue of works may also -depending on the author's intention - comprise just the works from a particular phase of his career or focus on just one medium or genre. Annotated catalogues of works usually include reproductions of the works. Further, a catalogue of works is introduced by a biography of the artist, followed by a brief survey of the stylistic features of his work before the individual works are described in detail. Important data are year of production, format, material, technique, size of editions (when prints are concerned) and provenance. A reliable annotated catalogue of works ends with a comprehensive bibliography.
