Jugendstil / Art Nouveau
Jugendstil is the variant in the German-speaking countries of an important pan-European art movement at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century. Jugendstil embraces all fields of art and especially the decorative and applied arts. Under the various names by which the movement went (Art Nouveau, the Modern Style, Modernismo, stile Liberty in Italy, the Viennese Secession), Jugendstil was equally important in virtually all European countries and the US, with the style varying from country to country. The salient characteristics of Jugendstil are decoratively sinuous line as well as floral surface ornament. Jugendstil stood for designing the entire living environment as a work of art. Consequently, a building was to be informed by a uniform design principle from the architecture to the appointments and furnishings of the interior to achieve a fusion of art and life. Utilitarian objects in everyday use were redesigned in accordance with this agenda. The focus was on the decorative and applied arts. In the years between 1895 and 1900 Jugendstil rebelled against the replication of historically traditional forms and symmetries as models but was certainly not a unified movement despite what the term may imply today. The Jugendstil agenda embraced numerous artistic platforms and manifestoes, a demand for functionalism coupled with expression. Jugendstil in Germany grew out of regional and local movements which did not arrive at a supraregional exchange of ideas until some years later, promoted by a bevy of new art journals, including "Simplicissimus" in Munich and "Pan" in Berlin. The German movement took its name from "Jugend" magazine that was launched in Munich in May 1896. The leading exponents of Jugendstil internationally in various fields of art are:
