New Objectivity
New Objectivity [German: Neue Sachlichkeit] is an early 20th-century German movement in painting regarded as the link between Expressionism, Dadaism and Surrealism. The heyday of New Objectivity was the 1920s. Coined by the art critic Gustav Friedrich Hartlaub in 1923, the term "Neue Schlichkeit" was not used to designate an aesthetic agenda until an exhibition mounted at the Kunsthalle, Mannheim, in 1925. New Objectivity is usually subdivided into three separate movements: Verism (Otto Dix, Christian Schad, George Grosz, Conrad Felixmüller and Rudolf Schlichter), Classicism (Georg Schrimpf and Alexander Kanoldt) and Magical Realism (Franz Radziwill, Richard Oelze, Carl Grossberg, Herbert Böttger).
