Op art
Op art (abbreviation of Optical art) is a style of 20th-century art which creates effects of flickering motion by means of abstract geometric form and color configurations. The color-light relationship and the optical illusions for which Op art is known are produced by the movement of the viewer. In passing, approaching or going away from a work of Op art, the viewer perceives the abstract geometrical forms and colors in constant flux as the pulsing interplay of color gradations that seem to fuse and vibrate. Op art emerged around 1960 in the US. The first major exhibition featuring Op art was held in New York in 1964/65. Adolf Richard Fleischmann (1892-1968) is the artist credited with being a forerunner of Op art. Leading exponents of Op art are:
