Pop art
Pop art became in the 1950s one of the most important art movements of the 20th century. It sprang up in England and the US almost simultaneously - albeit independently - and was at its height in the US during the 1960s. The origin of the term "Pop art" has been variously traced. It might derive from the English verb "to pop" or simply from the adjective "popular" (which implies wide currency as well as liking). Another explanation involves the British artist Richard Hamilton, whose 1956 blown-up photomontage of images taken from advertising included a lollipop designated by the word "Pop". The term itself was coined by the British critic Lawrence Alloway. In addition to "Pop art", Alloway used the expression "Pop culture". Pop art motifs are indeed drawn from popular culture and everyday living: consumerism, the mass media and advertising. Pop art wanted to turn whatever had mass appeal and was overwhelmingly popular into art, thus linking reality and art. In the US Pop art was not so much theoretical as explicit in orientation: the world of the supermarket and mass production, comic strips, glitzy stars with the image of eternal youth, icons of mass culture. The leading American exponents of Pop art were Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg and Claes Oldenburg.
