Surrealism
Surrealism is a movement that swept both the visual arts and literature in the first half of the 20th century. Inspired by psychoanalysis and the concept of the unconscious, artists strove to represent the unconscious by fusing dream and reality. Surrealism became an established movement in Paris from 1921, led by the French writer and critic André Breton. His "Surrealist Manifesto" was published in 1924. The term "Surrealism" means literally what transcends realism or is above and beyond reality. Surrealism sought human reality in the unconscious and drew on states of intoxication and dreams as the prime source of artistic inspiration. In the visual arts, things that are real in the absolute are represented in utterly abstruse or dissociated contexts so that viewers are unable to distinguish between dream and reality. At the same time, consciousness and reality are universally enlarged and all established conventions and values subverted. Surrealism must, therefore, be viewed as at core an anarchic and revolutionary take on art and world-view. The following were important Surrealist artists:
Alejandro Albarrán (*1947)
Hans Arp (1887-1966)
Leonora Carrington (*1917)
Giorgio de Chirico (1888-1978)
