Munich, 13 May, 2013, (kk) – It is not easy to elude the fascination of Zao Wou-Ki's "Composition". 1) Post War / Contemporary Art
2) Modern Art
On 1) Post War / Contemporary Art
Next to Zao Wou-Ki's poetic-abstract masterpiece, which will definitely make for excitement after the brilliant results in December 2012 for an oil painting (starting price: € 280.000, result: € 512.000*) and a watercolor (starting price: € 28.000, result: € 116.000*), this section is also led by Andy Warhol's "Campbell's Soup II". The portfolio from 1969 with 10 silkscreens in colors is one of Pop-Art's most renowned portfolios and will enter the race with an estimate of € 180.000-250.000.

Along with works by Italian artists such as Emilio Vedova ("Plurimo", estimate: € 100.000-150.000) and Enzo Cucchi, who will fascinate the audience with his work "Fucile" (estimate: € 80.000-100.000), Alexander Calder is yet another name at the top of the list of desired artworks. His ingenious Standing Mobile, which creates moments of calmness and motion with its filigree play of forms, has been estimated at € 150.000-250.000.

The German Informel is also represented with remarkable offerings, led by an untitled oil painting by Emil Schumacher from 1959 with an estimate of € 100.000-150.000, additionally, the sale comprises two of his mixed media works. Besides Martin and Brigitte Matschinsky-Denninghoff's 4,5 m tall sculpture "Kanzel" (estimate: € 90.000-120.000) and Gerhard Hoehme's 1955 oil painting "Westlicht" (estimate: € 50.000-70.000), Hans Hartung's 1958 chalk drawing "P 58-29" (estimate: € 22.000-25.000) adds even more splendor to this part of the auction.

While Georg Baselitz scores upside-down with his 1963 India ink drawing with an estimate of € 80.000-120.000, Eberhard Havekost's 2004 "Sonnenschutz 2" protrudes into the infinite blue of a summer's sky with an estimate of € 40.000-60.000. His unsparingly matter-to-fact oil painting "D-D" (estimate: € 45.000-50.000) leaves ample room for interpretation.

Three works by Gerhard Richter should not be omitted. He is represented with a 2008 lacquer work (estimate: € 75.000-100.000) as well as with the over-painted record "Kangarooh?" and the work "Souvenir" (estimate: each € 60.000-80.000) from 1994.

Works by ZERO artists are almost classics of contemporary art. Led by Otto Piene's oil painting "Die Geburt des Regenbogens" (estimate: € 40.000-60.000) from 1966, this section is particularly dominated by works from Adolf Luther and Heinz Mack.

Works by artists of the New Leipzig School also occupy front ranks on the popularity scale. Examples are Christoph Ruckhäberle's untitled oil painting from 2005 (estimate: € 25.000-30.000) and David Schnell's 2003 work "Kollision in der Baumschule". Impressive both in terms of motif and its size of 185 x 286 cm, the acrylic work will be called up with an estimate of € 50.000-70.000.

The range of offerings is completed by work from renowned artists such as Andreu Alfaro, Günther Förg, Norbert Kricke, Markus Lüpertz, Georges Mathieu, Nam June Paik and Sigmar Polke.
KleePaul Klee
Kinder und Hund. 1920
Watercolor and India ink. (6.4 x 7.3 in)
Estimate: € 220.000-280.000
On 2) Modern Art
This section is led by more than a dozen works estimated in six digit realms, among them a masterpiece by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner painted on both sides, which will be called up with an estimate of € 600.000-800.000 (see press release from 29 April, 2013) and Paul Klee's watercolor and India ink work "Kinder und Hund". The work from 1920 has a glamorous provenance: The famous Mexican artist and husband of Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, is among the previous owners of the work that has been estimated at € 220.000-280.000.

Unmistakable for their very own style are the works by Gabriele Münter. Her unstressed manner delivers proof of her unique poise in handling light, color and form. The artist is represented with half a dozen works, among them two with estimates of € 140.000-180.000 each. Both the "Birkenallee" from 1923 as well as the "Bergwiese" from 1910 – next to the "Kirche im Dorf, Murnau" from the 1930/40s (estimate: € 180.000-240.000) – are guaranteed to be popular with bidders.

What is so special about Karl Schmidt-Rottluff's "Anlegeplatz am Fluss" is the unusually strong palette, which one would normally not put past a 72-years-old. Like hardly any other of his painter colleagues was Schmidt-Rottluff able to maintain his juvenile vigor, which becomes obvious in an unadulterated manner in this late masterpiece. The estimate is at € 140.000-180.000.

The same estimate has been tagged to Hermann Max Pechstein's oil painting "Sonnenblumen" from 1948. Even though the artistic furor that Van Gogh struck in his sunflower pictures is significant for this subject, Pechstein, who turned to more uncontroversial motifs in the 1930s because of the restraints in those days, remained true to himself and his very own expression.

Other lots worthwhile mentioning are Franz Marc's 1902 oil painting "Eichenstämme im Vorfrühling2 (estimate: € 100.000-150.000) as well as three works by the outstanding German late impressionists Max Slevogt ("Gartenweg zum Sommerhaus", estimate: € 90.000-120.000) and Max Liebermann ("Blühender Nutzgarten mit Haus", estimate: € 40.000-60.000 and "Blumenterrasse nach Süden2, estimate: € 30.000-40.000) as well as works by, among others, Alexej von Jawlensky ("Variation: Jubilance (Seelenwandern", estimate: € 120.000-150.000), Wassily Kandinsky ("Quadrat im Nebel", estimate: € 100.000-150.000) and Emil Nolde ("Untergehende Sonne", estimate: € 120.000-160.000).
