Lyonel Feininger is regarded one of Expressionism's most renowned artists. His subtle village views count among his greatest achievements, both in form of paintings as well as on paper. Our sheet, executed in a strong and fluent stroke of the brush, opens the view onto the church of Niedergrunstedt. This charcoal drawing was made in a year that was both productive as well as innovative: In 1913 Feininger showed five of his works in the exhibition "Ersten Deutschen Herbstsalon" at the "Sturm"-Galerie of Herwarth Walden in Berlin, where in 1917 his first one-man show would take place. The same year Feininger was able to sell a decent amount of works to influential customers. [KP].
