Coornhert moved from Amsterdam to Haarlem in 1540, where he became court engraver of the master of ceremonies of Reinoud van Brederode. As of 1547 he worked for Maarten van Heemskerck. “The extremely productive co-operation, from which some 200 prints, initially etchings, later mostly engravings, emerged, was not restricted to the mere realization of Heemskerck’s drawings in print form. The strong thematic influence that Coornhert had on Heemskerck’s art becomes most obvious in the religious allegories […]. Many of the captions are in close connection with Coornhert‘s moral-philosophic theories and were inspired or written […] by Coornhert.“ (Willy Le Loup / AKL).
