In his late figure watercolors, the so-called Ghosties, Feininger tied in with a world of forms that he had developed as illustrator and caricaturist. His early figures were dynamic, however, the later Ghosties seem rather fragile. They are friendly ghosts, created with a certain wit they occupy an important spot in the artist's later period of creation. [KD].
