Lyonel Feininger first created exaggerated architectural works in 1910/11 with the etching "Die grüne Brücke". He picks up the topic again with "Das Tor" and displays monumental architecture that dominates over the other elements. Additionally, Feininger increased his etching technique and adds a dramatic-gloomy atmosphere with edgy-dark shades. Narrative elements, as they were initially predominant in Feininger's prints, showing his beginnings as an illustrator, are now repelled in favor of an independent architecture.
