Paul Jenkins is one of the most important representatives of Abstract Expressionism in the USA. Over decades he continued his work with remarkable consistency. Unlike contemporaries such as Rothko and Noland, he leaves great freedom for the colors to unfold according to their physical characteristics, he allows them to flow freely and to mix. This strong independent existence makes for this sheet's particular appeal. With great poise Jenkins presents different ways of treating color and invites the observer, as it is often the case with his "Phenomena" pictures to indulge in his color worlds. [DB]
