Jan Peter Tripp was born in Oberstdorf in the Allgäu in1945. As of 1967 he studied sculpting at the Stuttgart Academy under Rudolf Daudert. From 1970 to 1972 he was master student in the painting class of Rudolf Hausnerat the Academy of Visual Art in Vienna. In the 1970s he received comissions for stage designs at the Stuttgart State Theatre. In the following years he gained international recognition through numerous exhibitions both in Germany as well as abroad. Just as it is the case with this work, his watercolors captivate the observer through their incredible technical precision and an almost supernatural Photo Realism. Tripp explains his realistic style as follows: "I don't paint what I see, I paint things I can't see. Pictures on which everybody sees what is shown do not require explanations! Unless the artist is a mystery-monger." (Jan Peter Tripp 2002, transl. quote after: Künstler. Kritisches Lexikon der Gegenwartskunst, vol. 62, issue 15, 2nd quarter 2003, p. 15). [KH].
