LITERATURE: David Schnell. Parasol Unit Foundation for Contemporary Art. Hatje-Cantz Verlag, Ostfildern 2006, with illu.

The main interest of David Schnell is on landscape painting, a genre within art history that takes its autonomous rank next to the portrait, history painting, still lifes and genre scenes. David Schnell‘s imagery shows forests, meadows, clearings or fields that act as superordinate scenes. In the pictures he produces scenes that unfold their special effect through the interplay of naturalness and artificiality. The landscape experience is not guided by a pure nature experience - rather, the viewer's gaze is often irritated by surreal installations such as wooden slats floating in the air or seemingly functionless soaring beams inserted into the ground. In addition, David Schnell designed visual worlds that are most fascinating for their central perspective and their visible composition lines that capture and guide the viewer's eye. [KH].
