PROVENANCE: Private collection Southern Germany (present from artist).

After two apprentices as limer and decoration painter, Heinrich Ehmsen attended the Düsseldorf School of Arts and Crafts from 1906 to 1909. Living in Munich as of 1911, the art of the "Blaue Reiter" had increasing influence on his style. As of 1929 Ehmsen lived in Berlin. In 1937 he was defamed as "degenerate" and his paintings were removed from German collections. After the war Ehmsen taught at the West Berlin School of Visual Arts and transferred to the East Berlin Academy of Arts in 1950. [KP].
