Prince of Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst was Prime Minister of Bavaria from 1866 to 1870 and Chancellor of Germany between 1894 and 1900. A fully executed version of the portrait from 1896 is in possession of the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin. [CB].

The hand-written confirmation by Lolo von Lenbach from 10 May, 1910 on rear of the original canvas has been covered through the doubling. The previous owner documented the inscription on photographs which are available as digital scans.

PROVENANCE: In Southern German family possession (since ca. 1910, presumably as present from Lolo von Lenbach).
