Baumeister began to show interest in structures that would make for a loosened and vivid surface as early as in the 1930s. Just as it is the case with this painting, the surface becomes a medium for an almost linear drawing that seems to stray about the pictorial ground. Primeval associations are evoked, a phenomenon that Baumeister uses as basic theme of many his work cycles. Casually arranged forms and color fields emanate a merry weightlessness that leaves a lot of freedoom for association. Associations with musical tempi are characteristic of Baumeister and many his colleagues from the days of the 'Informel'. With great aplomb, primeval ideas are clad with burlesque features, delivering it from all severity. The subtle humor that is part of this composition finds its analogy in the playful way that the figures seem to dance about the composition.
