Moos Gallery, Toronto.

Iconographically spoken, the bathing nudes are among the expressionist's most important subjects. The artist generation's free attitude towards life, with which they had overcome traditional constraints, has not been described as accurate by any other theme. The dominant subject are naked bodies, free from both clothes as well as conventions, that move in open nature, the sea behind them and a dramatic sky above them. However, the style is more moderate and the coloring is very soft, even more increased by the rosé background. In this gouache Erich Heckel evokes a slightly sentimental atmosphere that calls reminiscence of a gentle memory.
