Initially Zao Wou-Ki, who emigrated to Paris in 1948, still felt obliged to traditional Chinese art. During a sojourn in Switzerland in 1951, the year our etching was made, he became acquainted with works by Paul Klee that deeply impressed him. Klee's art was his source of inspiration for the combination of Chinese and Western art.
