In a context of a more settled situation in life, a feeling of inner well-being and personal liberation a number of important works were made in Murnau. These work demonstrate her artistic breakthrough and newly gained means of expression. This work "Kirchgarten in Murnau" was also made during this very important creative period. In 1909 Gabriele Münter worked on the snow-covered local cemetery in Kochel, back then together with Kandinsky. While the crosses in that work are fragmentarily rendered, it is the view onto the mountains that makes this work so special. The grave in foreground, kept in a strong shade of red, makes for a highly visible accent. A tombstone in the composition's right margin is bordered in a lucent blue. Gabriel Münter masterly captures the atmosphere of a rural cemetery in this work.
