One of the artist's most famous motif and preferred theme were the campaigns of the Cossacks in the steppe, which Brandt repeated in numerous variants up into his late period of creation. Among them we also find this characteristic illustration of the single guidon horseman who proudly rides with aplomb a little off the battle. The horseman's sharp contour and the lucent orange flag are silhouetted against the sky in glistening back light. The fierce battle between the brave warriors is raging in the dusty and dry grassland in the background. The steppe's vastness is tangible even in such a small format.
