Ohne Titel (Dartington Hall). Ca. 1935.
Oil on canvas.
37.5 x 48 cm (14.7 x 18.8 in).

With a certificate issued by Dr. Heiner Hachmeister, Committee Mark Tobey, from 20 November, 2014. The work will be included into the forthcoming catlog raisonneé.

From 1930 to 1938 Mark Tobey taught at Dartington Hall School in Devonshire, which, next to Summerhill, was one of the most revolutionary schools of the time. Apart from Mark Tobey, Paul Hindemith and Walter Gropius were among the teachers there. Mark Tobey, who had been intensively occupied with calligraphy since the 1910s, added ornamental elements to this rare view of Dartington Hall. The two-dimensional structure of the subject is overlaid by an ornamental motif. This already hints at the style of composition that would become main motivation for Mark Tobey's future compositions.
