Der Cimon della Pala in den Dolomiten, gesehen vom Rollepass aus. 1896.
Grisaille-Gouache.
Signed and dated lower right. On paper, laminated on board. 59 x 84.5 cm (23.2 x 33.2 in), the full sheet. [CB].

For this splendid view of the Dolomites Compton chose a grand landscape format: from a slightly elevated position on the shoulder of the pass, the observer looks up to the rock formations Cimon della Pala and Cima di Vezzana. The high artistic quality of the grisaille technique, with its absence of colors and the intensified contrasts, increases the sublime effect of this grand Alpine view.
In 1917 Compton repeated the same motif in minimal variation as a large-size oil painting (98 x 159 cm, sold by Dorotheum in Vienna in 1991). Various views of the Cimon della Pala can also be found on smaller watercolors. The series "Comptons berühmte Alpenlandschaften, Städtbilder usw.“, released by Kunstverlag Hanfstaengl's Nachfolger, Berlin in 1920, comprises a color heliograph that resembles this view. It has the catalog number 249: "Cimon della Pala, vom Rollepass aus gesehen“. (Cf. Jürgen and Sibylle Brandes, Edward Theodore Compton - Maler und Bergsteiger, Munich 2007, illu. 398 (p. 243), illu. 413 (p. 254) and p. 380).
